D.C. woman sentenced for ID theft

of Library of Congress employees

A 35-year-old D.C. woman was sentenced to 30 months in prison for stealing private information from Library of Congress employees to finance a $38,000 shopping spree.

Labiska Gibbs convinced her cousin William Sinclair, an employee of the library, to access the payroll system to obtain employee data to fraudulently apply for lines of credit, prosecutors said.

Gibbs’ second cousin, William Sinclair Jr., 27, was sentenced to three years probation for his role. Prosecutors said Sinclair he did not receive any money in the theft.

Police: Man arrested for killing

opossum during ride-along

A Virginia man is facing an animal cruelty charge after police said he killed an opossum while on a police ride-along.

While stopped at a gas station near the North Carolina border, Danville police say Evan Bryce Schuler, 22, jumped out of the patrol car and ran toward an opossum, kicked it several times, killing it.

Schuler to police his behavior was “instinctive” because he lives on a farm and opossums kill his chickens.

Abduction attempt investigated

Fairfax County police are investigating a report of an attempted abduction in the Oakton area.

At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, one man allegedly grabbed a 9-year-old girl and attempted to drag her away while signaling to another man. The girl screamed and got away.

The first man was described as black, 45 and about 5 feet 10. He was chubby with a gray mustache and a missing tooth. He wore a dark blue short-sleeved collared shirt with a name tag, blue jeans and white sneakers. The second man was black, 20 to 35 years old. He was wearing a shirt similar to the first suspect and dark pants.

Temp embezzles $120,000

A former temporary worker was charged with stealing more than $120,000 from a trade association in Alexandria, federal court documents said.

From 2007 to 2009, police said, Yvette C. Logan forged 63 checks worth $129,000 drawn on the accounts of the Ambulatory Surgery Foundation, where she worked.
