Police arrest bank robber who threatened to detonate nuke

Prince George’s County police say a bank robber who threatened to blow up a nuclear device in a series of heists has been arrested.

Police said 42-year-old Marvin L. Simmons was arrested Monday in Donna, Texas, near the state’s border with Mexico.

The Alexandria man has been charged with armed robbery in two Prince George’s heists: the Dec. 29 robbery of the Wells Fargo at 5801 Silver Hill Road in District Heights and the Jan. 10 robbery of the SunTrust branch at 5750 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro, according to Cpl. Evan Baxter, a police spokesman.

Police have said that one suspect was believed to be responsible for threatening to detonate a nuclear weapon during four bank robberies. Baxter said police are still investigating whether Simmons was involved in the other two heists, at a Capital One branch in Largo and an M&T Bank in Clinton.

Baxter said Simmons was developed as a suspect “through investigation” but would not elaborate.
