Boy, 15, charged with stabbing elderly woman to death

Prince George’s County police have arrested a 15-year-old boy, saying he killed a 92-year-old woman during a robbery in Forestville.

William Roger Fitts was charged as an adult Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of Thelma Elaine Steele. She was found stabbed to death in her home in the 2900 block of East Avenue at about 8:30 Monday night.

Police spokesman Cpl. Henry Tippett said the teenager lived on the same street as Steele and they knew each other in passing.

Evidence found at the crime scene led to the teenager. Police recovered the knife used in the killing, and he has also admitted his involvement, police said.

Steele was found by police after a family member called authorities to check on her welfare.

Johnson, 24, was found shot to death on the 900 block of Westminster Street NW at about 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2010.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police said Peoples is charged with second-degree murder while armed.

Crime drops in Md.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said crime dropped 5 percent last year in the state.

Violent crime decreased 6 percent and property crimes decreased 4.9 percent in 2010 compared with 2009, according to O’Malley’s office.

Homicides declined by 3.2 percent, with 14 fewer killings in Maryland.

O’Malley credited the state’s focus on improving technology and information-sharing for the drop in crime, citing increased use of license-plate readers, DNA and shared arrest data.
