July shooting in Southeast D.C. ruled a homicide

Officials have ruled the death of a Southeast D.C. man who was shot in July and died in March a homicide, police said.

On July 17, 2011, police responded to the 300 block of Ridge Road SE and found 43-year-old Pernell Lonnie Dawkins suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police had said.

Dawkins was paralyzed from the shooting and was taken to a rehabilitation center in Maryland, where he died March 14 as a result of his injuries. His remains were taken to a medical examiner’s office in Baltimore, and on Monday his death was ruled a homicide by gunshot.
