The ex-girlfriend of a Baltimore City man accused of repeatedly stabbing her new boyfriend contradicted the statement she gave to Howard police by failing to identify him as the assailant.
Sharon Johnson, of Columbia, testified Wednesday before Howard Circuit Judge Lenore Gelfman that it was too dark during the early-morning attack for her to identify the assailant.
She said she heard her boyfriend, Jefferson Bolden, 27, of Baltimore City, being attacked around 4:50 a.m. Dec. 23, 2007, at her apartment on the 5900 block of Turnabout Lane.
“I guess he was stabbed,” she said, “because at the front of the door there was a knife on the floor.”
Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Weal then asked her to read a statement she gave to a detective later that day in which she identified the defendant, Kazeem Akinyoade Akinniyi, 26, of Baltimore City, as the man who stabbed Bolden.
In that statement, Johnson said Akinniyi told her, “If I can’t have you, no one can.”
Under cross-examination from defense attorney Janette DeBoissiere, Johnson said the last time she remembered seeing Akinniyi was in October 2007, but hadn’t dated him for more than a year.
Bolden also said he couldn’t identify Akinniyi as the man who attacked him.
Prior to the incident, Bolden said he went to Johnson’s apartment, ate something and went to bed.
“When I woke up, I was stabbed up,” he said.
“But I didn’t really know I was stabbed until I felt blood.”
After a scuffle in which Bolden was stabbed again during an attempt to take the knife from the man, Bolden said the man jumped off the balcony.
Police said Akinniyi broke both legs after making hitting the ground.
Akinniyi is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, burglary and related offenses.
He faces life in prison if convicted of attempted first-degree murder.
The trial is expected to conclude today.
