Woman dead, family displaced after fires One woman was killed and a family was displaced in separate fires at homes in the District.
The woman died in a fire that broke out at her home on the second floor of a four-story building on the 1700 block of S Street NW at about 11 p.m. Sunday, fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said.
Piringer said the fire appeared to have been caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. Fire crews had difficulty entering the apartment because of a “hoarding” situation and “extreme clutter,” he said.
The woman, whom fire officials did not identify, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The fire was contained to the woman’s apartment.
In a separate incident, a blaze broke out at a rowhouse on the 800 block of 10th Street NE at about 10 p.m. Sunday.
A Capitol Hill family with two children was displaced by the blaze, which Piringer said caused $600,000 in damage and was sparked by a plumbing renovation project that caused pipes to catch fire.
No one was injured.
