Man convicted for false tips

in Va. Tech student case

An Alexandria man was found guilty of providing false tips in the case of slain Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.

Prosecutors said Alvin T. Daniels, 51, anonymously called the state tip line claiming that a 34-year-old Prince William County man was responsible for Harrington’s disappearance.

Police followed up on the tip and concluded that Daniels was trying to get back at the Prince William man. Daniels received six months suspended jail time.

Harrington was abducted from a rock concert at Charlottesville last year and her body was found on a Albemarle County farm in January. The investigation continues.

Ex-DC Tech office execs sentenced for kickbacks

Yusuf Acar, the former head of security for the D.C. technology office was sentenced to more than two years in prison for his role in running a bribery and kickback scheme.

Acar, 42, the ringleader of the scheme, accepted more than $500,000 in exchange for steering government contracts to businessman Sushil Bansal.

Also on Thursday, Acar’s underling at the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer, Farrukh Awan was sentenced to 14 months in prison for his role.

Bansal, chief executive of District-based Advanced Integrated Technologies Corp., was sentenced to 20 months behind bars last week.

Letter carrier gets two years

A former U.S. postal carrier was sentenced to more than two years in prison for stealing more than $130,000 in government checks.

Shareen Wilson, 42, stole more than 50 D.C. and U.S. treasury department checks from a post office in Northeast D.C.

Death penalty upheld for man

who killed D.C. officer’s son

A federal appeals court in Virginia upheld the death penalty for a Maryland man convicted of kidnapping and killing a D.C. police officer’s son.

In 2002, Kenneth Lighty, of Hillcrest Heights, abducted 19-year-old Eric L. Hayes II, drove him to Prince George’s County, and shot in the head and the body execution-style.
