Howard County police said they have arrested the “Preppy Burglar” after a witness recognized the man on television.

And Montgomery County police have added more charges against the 30-year-old suspect, Jeremy Matthew Hall of Silver Spring.

Police gave the prowler his nickname because he dressed in professional attire during his break-ins. He wore dress shirts, ties and glasses likely to appear as if he was on professional business or had reason to be in the neighborhood, police said.

Howard County police put out several photos and videotape from the burglaries last week, and a caller said he saw the man on a local TV news broadcast and recognized him. Investigators confirmed the caller’s information, positively identified Hall and executed a search warrant at Hall’s home at 1425 Silo Way.

Howard County police charged him with burglary, theft and destruction of property. The citizen who called in the tip will receive a $500 reward, police said.

Montgomery County police charged Hall with first-degree burglary and theft over $10,000 for burglary in Spencerville in which two guitars and a safe containing jewelry and personal identification documents were stolen. Hall was released Friday after posting a $7,500 bond.

In one video, the sharply dressed suspect approached a front door carrying papers. He knocked on the door, peered into the windows, then went to the rear of the home, put on gloves and broke into a window. He left through the front door with electronics equipment and other property.

Police are investigating to determine if there is evidence to tie him to any other burglaries.
