Prince George’s County police chief Melvin C. High announced Thursday that he will be resigning at the end of next month as he released crime statistics showing a near 8 percent dip in violent crime during the first half of 2008 from the same period last year, though there was a significant jump in the number of rapes.
First half of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007:
» Homicides: 2007, 81; 2008, 75 (7.4 percent drop)
» Rapes: 2007, 85; 2008, 102 (20 percent increase)
» Burglaries: 2007, 3,157; 2008, 3,473 (10 percent increase)
