George Huguely V, the former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, was denied a new trial Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.
Huguely, of Chevy Chase, was convicted of second-degree murder in February for killing 22-year-old Yeardley Love, in May 2010. Love was also a lacrosse player at the Charlottesville school.

In asking for a new trial, Huguely’s lawyers pointed to a series of errors before and during the trial. But a Charlottesville Circuit Court judge said Wednesday that there was overwhelming evidence supporting Huguely’s conviction, according to the AP.
Huguely is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 30. The trial jury recommended a 25-year prison sentence for the murder conviction and a one-year prison sentence for a grand larceny conviction. The judge can lower the sentence but not raise it.
