Crashes kill 2 in Fairfax

Two people have been killed in separate car crashes in Fairfax County, police said.

In the first crash Thursday night, 71-year-old Margaret Brigidini, of Lorton, attemped to turn onto Zion Drive from Ox Road in West Springfield when she drove into the path of another car and the two vehicles collided in the intersection, police said. Brigidini died at the scene, while the driver of the other car and two passengers — a 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl — suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital.

Police said Brigidini was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and added that speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the accident. Police are investigating the incident.

In the second crash, Christopher Cobb, 54, was driving on Braddock Road at about 6 p.m. when he crossed the median near an intersection at Shirley Gate Road, driving into oncoming traffic. Cobb hit a woman driving a Toyota Highlander, pushing her vehicle into the path of a Pontiac Vibe, which struck the car. Cobb died at the scene, while the 38-year-old woman driving the Highlander suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifed to the hospital. The 57-year-old man who had been driving the Pontiac was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt, and that speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
