District man gets 8 years on drugs, weapons convictions

A District man was sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday for convictions on drugs and weapons charges, officials said.

Richard Jones, 58, was sentenced in Federal Court in Washington for unlawful distribution of heroin and using, carrying and possessing a firearm during a drug trafficking offense, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On Aug. 17, police officers saw Jones and 38-year-old John Louis Roane in the 1000 block of Harvard Street NW. Jones leaned into Roane’s vehicle and gave him $406, and Roane in return gave Jones heroin, officials said.

An officer followed Jones as he walked into an apartment in a nearby building. Jones looked at an officer and dropped the heroin, officials said. Police arrested Jones and found additional amounts of heroin, more than 300 oxycodone pills, and four firearms in the apartment.
