Stupid crimes: Man arrested for bear cub theft

A fuzzy scheme

A South Carolina man was arrested after he stole a bear cub from an animal park in Wellford and then charged people a dollar each to pet it.

John Chadwick Montgomery, 31, pulled into his cousin’s driveway and told her he had stolen a bear. The cousin told police that Montgomery has many exotic pets and originally tried to steal a capuchin monkey from Hollywild Animal Park, but another money jumped on the thief’s back and bit him, so he settled for the bear.

Montgomery was charged with third-degree burglary and grand larceny.

No chemistry set for him this Christmas

A 15-year-old Manassas boy was injured trying to make a homemade smoke bomb on his kitchen stove. After the boy went to the emergency room with facial burns caused by a minor explosion and a flash fire, fire and rescue units investigated the boy’s home to make sure everything was safe. Fire marshals got a search warrant and seized chemicals and potentially hazardous materials from the house.

Bearing arms and more

Police say a man in Alabama went on a rampage down his street wielding an axe while buck naked. The man, who police say was Reginald Whitehead, ran onto a neighbor’s property and chased a boy playing in the yard into his house. The boy’s mother grabbed her gun and told the nude marauder not to take another step closer. The streaker dropped the axe and ran down the street. Whitehead was arrested and charged with menacing, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment.

Big-nosed bandit

A cross-dressing bank robber was caught because cops identified his huge nose, which his wigs and makeup couldn’t hide. Samuel Manoharan, 31, was arrested as a suspect for five bank holdups in Manhattan and Brooklyn, for which he disguised himself in women’s clothing and sporty sunglasses. A witness caught his license plate number after Manoharan escaped from one of the crime scenes, and police traced the number to his home. Cops staked out the house and recognized his bulging beak from surveillance footage. He has been charged with grand larceny and robbery.
