A Virginia State Police trooper has died after a training exercise on Lake Anna.
Trooper Mark D. Barrett, 41, died after a conducting a deep-water dive on Tuesday, according to the state police. Barrett was having difficulty as he and another trooper were returning to the lake’s surface after a dive, police said.
Barrett was taken to Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, where he died. The cause of death hasn’t been determined, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy.
The state police search and recovery team was conducting its annual training on the southeastern part of Lake Anna in Louisa County.
Barrett joined the state police in 2007.
