FBI targets Wells Fargo robber with ‘FBI’ hat

The FBI is asking for help finding an armed man who has held up two Northwest D.C. banks, one while wearing an “FBI” hat.

One robbery and one attempted robbery were reported in the fall at Wells Fargo branches. The FBI believes the same man is responsible for both heists.

The first robbery occurred on Sept. 30 at the Wells Fargo branch at 1804 Adams Mill Rd. NW at about 1:45 p.m. The suspect passed the teller a note, then pulled a weapon from his waistband, showed it to the teller and put it away, according to the FBI.

He obtained money and then fled. Authorities didn’t say how much cash he obtained.

The second incident happened one week later, on Oct. 7, at the Wells Fargo branch at 1100 Connecticut Ave. NW at about 4 p.m. The FBI said the suspect passed the teller a note announcing a robbery but then left the bank without obtaining any cash. The man didn’t display a weapon in that incident, authorities said.

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man who is 30 to 40 years old, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He has a medium build.

In the September incident, he was wearing black pants with a white stripe, a black shirt and a black hat that had a red and blue logo. In the October robbery attempt, he was wearing a dark hat that read “FBI.”

Anyone who has information about the heists is asked to call the FBI at 202-278-2000 or D.C. police at 202-727-9099. Tipsters can also send a text message to 50411.
