Man pleads guilty in 2009 Clarendon slaying

A man has admitted to beating and stabbing a man to death on a Clarendon street in 2009.

Court records show that 21-year-old Roger K. Clark III pleaded guilty in Arlington County Circuit Court to killing 57-year-old Carl Diener.

Diener, a retired government worker who was employed at an area gym, was slain on the 3200 block of N. 13th Street while walking to his job at the Arlington Sport and Health Club on Dec. 29, 2009.

Clark was charged in June 2011. Another man, Javon Martin, was also arrested, but charges against him have been dropped, according to court records.

Police have said there were no apparent connections between Diener and Clark before the killing.

Diener’s slaying stunned his friends, family and colleagues, and a $25,000 reward was offered for information that led to his killer. But police said evidence, not a tip, led to the arrest.
