Construction worker disappeared in NoVa

Police are asking the public, and particularly residents of the Hyattsville, Md., community a missing Springfield man frequented, to help “put the pieces together” about his disappearance.

Oscar Velasco Montano, 29, left for work doing construction at Tysons Corner at 5 a.m. on July 9. His sister, Jimena Montano, said he completed the workday and has not been seen since.

Police are asking anyone who might be acquainted with Montano in Hyattsville to contact them in case he might have gone there, as he was known to do.

Police are looking into security cameras around Tysons — and particularly at the 1800 block of International Drive where he was last seen working — and searching for leads.

“There is no evidence to suggest a crime occurred, but at the same time, we don’t have anything to prove otherwise,” said Fairfax County Police Officer Tawny Wright.

Jimena Montano said her family did not see her brother when he left for work on Saturday morning, but that they heard him leaving. About 5 feet 3 inches tall, Oscar Montano usually wears jeans, a T-shirt and boots to work, she said.

“We would keep calling and nothing,” Jimena said. “It’s not like him because he’s always checking where I am, what I am doing and everything. We are praying every day,” Jimena said.

Police said the car, which Montano borrowed from his uncle, was found on July 17, not far from where Montano was last seen. A family friend said the vehicle was found near the Olive Garden restaurant on the 8000 block of Boone Boulevard in Vienna.

“Because he’s a 29-year-old, when we initially got the report we felt there was a likelihood that he left voluntarily,” Wright said.

But the case was officially assigned a detective July 18, she said.

“We’re talking to everyone he knew — family, friends, co-workers, employers — to try and figure out if anything suspicious happened,” Wright said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Detective John Kelly at 703-246-7826 or Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.
