Man shot by officer in Fairfax
A man was shot and wounded by a Fairfax County police officer as officers were trying to serve a warrant.
Police said the 61-year-old man confronted officers with a knife when they knocked on his door at an apartment on the 5700 block of Old Mill Court in the Mount Vernon area shortly before noon Monday. The man did not obey officers who told him to drop the weapon, and the man was shot once in the upper body, authorities said.
Police did not identify the man but said officers were trying to serve him with a destruction of property warrant.
The man is being treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Police said the details of the shooting are still being investigated. Four officers were involved, and the department is still determining how many of them to place on administrative leave.
No officers were injured, said Lucy Caldwell, a Fairfax police spokeswoman.
Md. man burned lighting makeshift grill
A Waldorf man set himself on fire while lighting a homemade grill, authorities said.
Bruce Sharp, 45, suffered burns covering half his body while igniting a 270-gallon barrel that had been made into a barbecue grill, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The incident happened at about 6:15 a.m. Sunday.
2 planes crash in Va.
Two planes crashed Monday afternoon in Fauquier County, killing one of the pilots.
Virginia State Police said one plane was destroyed by fire from the crash, which happened at about 4 p.m., and that pilot died. The pilot of the other plane was hospitalized.
Police said the circumstances of the crash are being investigated.
