Bay Bridge crash remains under investigation

Prosecutors said they need more information before deciding whether to press charges against a teen involved in a fatal Bay Bridge accident nearly four months ago.

Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney Frank Kratovil Jr. said the investigation into the Aug. 10 crash — which killed 57-year-old truck driver John Robert Short — is not yet complete. The Maryland Transportation Authority Police submitted its report to Kratovil’s office Oct. 13, but Kratovil said he has requested unspecified additional information.

“Once having received those records, we will determine whether additional investigation is warranted,” Kratovil said in an e-mail.

A preliminary investigation days after the crash revealed that Candy Baldwin, 19, of Millington, crossed the center line during two-way traffic on the bridge’s eastern span. She sideswiped Short’s truck, which swerved across the bridge and slid on top of a concrete barrier before rolling over into the Chesapeake Bay.  The rear of the trailer broke through the barrier, leaving a 10-foot gap.

Baldwin told police she was traveling home around 4 a.m. from her mother’s wedding and fell asleep behind the wheel, MdTA Police Chief Marcus Brown said at the time. Speed and alcohol are other potential factors, Brown said.

Baldwin’s attorney, Steven Allen, declined to comment or make his client available to the press.

But Baldwin’s MySpace page — which once described her wild partying and displayed photos of the teen with a bottle of rum behind the wheel of her Camaro — has been updated to limit access from the public.

Baldwin, who suffered serious knee injuries in the crash, writes that she goes to physical therapy three times each week.

“Thanks for those who have supported me, and I’m sorry for those who haven’t, because you can’t possibly imagine the way I feel,” Baldwin writes. “… I never knew it was possible for your heart to hurt over someone you’ve never met.”
