Police: Post office stabbing over perceived line cut

UPDATE: The suspect in Thursday afternoon’s stabbing at the U.S. Post Office in Colesville has been identified and charged, Montgomery County police said Friday morning.

Ray Alfred Young, 67, of Silver Spring, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and concealing a dangerous weapon. Police said Young will have a bond review hearing Friday afternoon.

ORIGINAL STORY: Montgomery County police are investigating an incident in which a man allegedly stabbed and seriously injured another man in a Colesville post office after he believed his victim had cut in line at the counter.

The victim, a 58-year-old man, was at a U.S. Post Office on 13217 New Hampshire Ave. at 2:18 p.m. Thursday, police said. A post office employee had asked him to step aside from the counter to complete some paperwork, police said. After he was finished with the paperwork, the employee motioned him back to the counter.

The 67-year-old suspect watched the victim move back to the counter and believed the man had cut in line, police said. The suspect then left the post office to wait in the vestibule near the exit, and when the victim left the post office, the suspect attacked him, police said.

Two female postal employees intervened in the struggle that ensued, with at least one deploying pepper spray at the suspect, police said. The victim was left with multiple stab wounds while the suspect drove away, police said. After obtaining witness descriptions of the suspect’s car, police found him a mile away at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Route 29 and placed him under arrest.

The victim was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening wounds. His alleged attacker, who police will only identify as a 67-year-old man, has yet to be officially charged.

In a news release Thursday, police said that the postal workers who attempted to subdue the suspect prevented the victim from sustaining further injuries and may have saved the victim’s life.

Anyone who witnessed or has information about the incident should call the Third District Investigative Section at 301-565-5835.
