A Washington man was apprehended last week while walking near the scene of a Montgomery County bank he allegedly robbed.
Carl C. Purvis Jr., 42, of the 500 block of Peabody Street NW, was charged with armed robbery and theft in connection with a bank robbery in Silver Spring on Thursday afternoon.
The robbery occurred at about 2:15 p.m. at Chevy Chase Bank, located at 8315 Georgia Ave., Montgomery County police said.
Police said Purvis entered the bank and gave the teller a note that demanded cash and implied that he had a weapon.
He then left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.
The robber did not display a weapon, and no one was injured in the incident, police said.
Patrol officers who responded to the scene were looking for a heavyset black man who was about 5 feet 10 inches tall, had dreadlocks and was wearing a red and blue plaid shirt. Officers saw someone matching the robber’s description walking southbound on Georgia Avenue near the bank shortly after the incident.
Purvis was identified as a suspect in the robbery through his physical description, Montgomery County police Capt. Paul Starks said.
Police said Purvis was apprehended without incident, and the stolen cash was recovered.
Purvis is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on $75,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 24 in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville.
No lawyer was listed for Purvis in online court records Monday.
