U.Md. student sexually assaulted in dorm

A University of Maryland student was sexually assaulted while sleeping at her on-campus residence. At about 3 a.m. Friday, the student sleeping at her residence in her Leonardtown awoke to find a man that she did not know fondling her, university police said. She screamed and the man fled. D.C. police ID person in suspicious death

D.C. police have identified the man found in women’s clothing as 35-year-old Gaurav Gopolan, of the District. His death remains under investigation. Gopolan was an engineering researcher at the University of Maryland, and had a doctorate in aeronautical engineering from India. Police have not determined the cause of death and are awaiting the results of a toxicology report, which could take several weeks. Police are listing the incident as a suspicious death and are investigating it as a homicide. Gopolan was found unconscious and unresponsive in the 2600 block of 11th Street NW.

Elderly couple finds intruder in home

An elderly McLean couple was awakened by a pair of burglars who broke into their home. The couple in their 70s discovered two intruders in their home on the 1500 block of Pathfinder Lane shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday, Fairfax County police said. The woman heard noises from her upstairs bedroom and went downstairs, where she encountered one of the burglars, police said. The intruder demanded money and struck her. The thieves fled from the home with a purse when one of the victims screamed, police said. One intruder is a man who is about 6 feet tall; the other is described as a “petite female.”
