On this day, Feb. 24, in 2000, Sammy “the Bull” Gravano, the highest ranking mob turncoat at the time, was arrested for overseeing a major family-run Ecstasy ring after relocating to Arizona. Gravano had entered the witness protection program after testifying against Gambino boss John Gotti and helping the feds rack up 37 convictions. In 1998, Gravano came out of hiding and dared gangsters to try to kill him. In his biography, he admitted to killing many men but said he opposed dealing drugs and letting his offspring get into the life of crime. Meanwhile, he partnered with a local youth gang known as the “Devil Dogs” after his son became friends with the gang’s leader. Gravano sold more than 25,000 tablets of Ecstasy a week before his arrest. Gravano was sentenced to 19 years in Colorado’s Supermax prison. Scott McCabe
