Grandmother fights off burglar A Capitol Hill grandmother fought off a would-be burglar using her grandchildren’s toy.

NBC4’s Pat Collins reports that the Catherine Turton encountered the man in the basement of her son’s home in the 800 block of A Street SE on Tuesday. Turton was staying at the home to help take care of three grandchildren after their mother was killed in a garage fire.

Turton said one of her grandchildren alerted her to an intruder in the basement. She grabbed a hobby horse — a wooden stick with a toy horse head at one end — and confronted the man, who had arm loads of the family’s belongings.

The man grabbed her by the neck, but she recovered and used the toy to scare him away. Police say they found the robber nearby hiding behind a car.

Man arrested in door-knock shooting

A man has been arrested for a shooting at a Potomac home, police said.

DeAngelo Jackson, 20, of Poolesville, was charged Saturday with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and several firearms-related charges, court records show. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 11.

According to an investigation, the 21-year-old victim and his roommate were inside a residence in the 8500 block of Victory Lane on April 8 when the doorbell rang. The victim answered the door and was confronted by Jackson, who had a handgun.

The man tried to close the door. However, Jackson pushed through the door, shot the victim while inside the residence and then left the scene, police said. The victim was treated at a hospital.
