Police arrest suspect in double stabbing of Columbia residents

Howard police Monday arrested the man who they say stabbed two people after creeping into their Columbia house over the weekend.

Gregory Imes, of no fixed address, is charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, as well as burglary in connection with the Saturday morning stabbing in the 10300 block of Twin Rivers Road, police said.

Police said the victims, Reginald Crudup and Maria Elana Cokley, both 51, suffered multiple stab wounds and were taken to the University of Maryland  Shock Trauma Center in critical condition. The hospital declined Monday to release updated information on the victims’ conditions, due to family requests.

Police said they received many tips from the public and were able to arrest Imes without incident Monday at a McDonald’s restaurant in the 10000 block of Washington Boulevard in Laurel.

Detectives believe Imes broke into the victim’s house through a sliding glass door, and stabbed Crudup and Cokley in their master bedroom before fleeing. The victims were the only people home at the time and a knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

Investigators believe Imes is the former boyfriend of Cokley’s daughter, but detectives are continuing to investigate, serving search warrants and gathering information.

Imes is scheduled to go to trial in December for prior robbery and assault charges, according to court records. He also was found guilty of robbery in 2001.
