White powder found at D.C. schools

Emergency crews responded to reports of suspicious packages at five D.C. public schools.

A D.C. police spokesman Anthony Clay said the schools received letters around noon Thursday containing white powdery substance. Some of the schools were evacuated. The letter at Terrell Elementary on Wheeler Road SE was determined to be non-threatening, and crews have already left the scene.

D.C. police, the FBI and D.C. fire rescue crews were investigating.

The other schools were Lafayette Elementary School, 5700 Broad Branch Road NW; Ron Brown Middle School, 4800 block of Meade Street NE; Martin Luther King Elementary, 3200 block of Sixth Street SE; and William Powell Elementary, 1350 Upshur St. NW.
