A Montgomery County man has been charged with animal cruelty after police found one dead horse and several others, including a foal, in poor health on a Dickerson farm, police said Tuesday.

Robert W. Curry Jr., 30, of Poolesville, kept about 30 horses on a farm on the 19100 block of Martinsburg Road.

Of those, at least four were found to be malnourished, and a fifth was found dead when police visited the property on Friday, police said.

When the horses were seized and examined by a veterinarian, three were determined to be in critical condition; they had grown so thin that their back, rib and hip bones were protruding and causing lameness, police said. One of the sickly horses was nursing a foal.

Curry was released on $25,000 bail.
