28 arrested during protest on White House sidewalk

Twenty-eight people were arrested Tuesday evening on a White House sidewalk during a protest of the Trayvon Martin killing, police said.

U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Brooks said 27 people were arrested for disobeying lawful order and one was arrested for interfering with agency functions.

Protesters are not allowed to stop on the White House sidewalk and have to keep moving, Brooks said. If protesters continue to stay after three warnings, Park Police will arrest them for disobeying lawful order, he said.

Martin was unarmed when he was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26.

Zimmerman, who claimed self-defense, initially wasn’t charged in the incident but now is facing a charge of second-degree murder. He was released Monday after posting bail and has pleaded not guilty.
