Three dead after shooting at Oregon shopping center

At least three people are dead after a shooting at a shopping center in Oregon on Sunday, according to authorities.

The City of Bend Police Department confirmed the gunman killed himself and two other people during the incident.

The shooting occurred at the Forum Shopping Center in Bend, Oregon, at about 7 p.m. local time. The shooting began in the parking lot of the shopping center, according to police, and then continued inside a Safeway grocery store, where multiple people were shot.

One person was shot and killed inside the entrance to the store, and a second person was shot and killed inside the store, the Bend Police Department said in a statement.

Police found an additional person, believed to be the gunman, deceased in the store. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the gunman committed suicide inside the Safeway and that there is no evidence of a second shooter.

The initial investigation found that Bend police officers did not fire any shots at the scene, according to the police statement.

St. Charles Medical Center spokeswoman Lisa Goodman told local news outlet KTVZ that at least one person was dead on arrival at the hospital as a result of the shooting and another person is injured but reported to be in good condition.

Sheila Miller, the police department’s communications manager, told reporters at the scene that police recovered an AR-15 rifle, according to KTVZ.

The City of Bend Police Department tweeted Sunday that there is an active investigation in the area of the shopping center and asked residents to avoid the location.

Deschutes County 911 dispatchers received numerous calls reporting multiple gunshots in the area of the shopping center just after 7 p.m., according to KTVZ.

An employee at the Safeway told the Bulletin that a person walked into the store and fired multiple shots. Another Safeway employee told the news outlet that he heard nine gunshots and then saw a person running out of the store, being pursued by police.
