A former Metro supervisor was sentenced to jail for falsifying workers’ timesheets, causing the transit agency to pay employees more than $24,500 for hours they didn’t work.
Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge Larnzell Martin sentenced 52-year-old Alfred Atanga to one year in jail, with all but 270 days suspended — meaning the former supervisor at a Metro call center in Hyattsville will serve nine months in jail, according to court records. He will also spend five years on probation.
A jury in March convicted Atanga, of Bowie, of theft charges.
Authorities said Atanga, who oversaw the call center’s payroll system, fraudulently submitted timesheets for some employees, which allowed the workers to collect overtime they didn’t earn.
“Mr. Atanga was given the responsibility of managing WMATA resources and he abused his position in an attempt to gain favor with those who benefitted from his actions,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a statement Monday.
