Teen admits to killing man with shovel

A 16-year-old Montgomery County boy pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of a 57-year-old Gaithersburg man. Artie Ellis said he and his accomplice, Emily Geller, 18, only meant to rob Ali Zare when they lured him down a Potomac jogging trial last May. Ellis said he struck Zare in the face with a shovel. The medical examiner said Zare’s death was caused by blunt force injury to the back of his head. Geller’s murder trial is scheduled for May.

Suspect in patient death ID’d

Virginia police have identified a patient as a suspect in the death of a 22-year-old Alexandria man at Central State Hospital in Petersburg. Surveillance video shows George Phillips, 31, entering the hospital room of fellow patient Justin Davis, who was found dead the next morning. Phillips had been charged with bank robbery and attempted murder of a police officer. Phillips was sent to the hospital to see whether he was competent to stand trial.

Body found in Silver Spring

Montgomery County police were investigating the death of a man found in Silver Spring near the ramp to the Capitol Beltway. Police said the body was discovered around 2 p.m. Monday in the 9800 block of New Hampshire Avenue. The man did not have any identification on him, police said.

Arlington man slain

Arlington County police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old man who was found injured on a sidewalk late Sunday. The victim, identified as Cain Guevara-Estrada, of Arlington, was the first Arlington County homicide in 2010.
