Carjacker caught after police track stolen cab’s GPS

Investigators used a taxi’s GPS system to track down the vehicle and the customer who carjacked it, Prince William County police said.

Police allege that 29-year-old Margarito Avalar Escobar, of Chantilly, was a passenger in the cab when he began assaulting the driver near Prince William Parkway and York Drive in Woodbridge at about 2:45 a.m. Monday.

He ordered the driver to get out of the cab and then fled in the vehicle. Authorities said police used the taxi’s GPS system to locate the vehicle just more than five miles away, near Ox Road and Palmer Road in Lorton, where Avalar Escobar was arrested.

He is charged with carjacking and was being held Monday without bond.
