Montgomery police name officer who died in crash

A seven-year Montgomery County police veteran whose wife is pregnant with triplets was killed when his cruiser slammed into a tree while he was responding to a call, authorities said.

Police have not said why 31-year-old Hector Ayala’s cruiser left Randolph Road and hit the tree early Sunday morning in Wheaton. The Spanish-speaking officer was highly valued on the midnight shift in Wheaton, where he was regularly called upon as an interpreter. When he crashed into the tree and died, Ayala was on his way to back up another officer who was on the scene of a fight.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call Montgomery County detectives at 301-840-2435.
