Growth rate slows for D.C. bankruptcies

Bankruptcy filings in the Washington area are rising at a much slower rate than they were a few months ago. Statistics from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts show that filings in D.C. rose just 0.7 percent for the 12-month period that ended March 31, compared with the same time period the previous year. Filings rose 6.4 percent in Maryland and 1.8 percent in the Eastern District of Virginia. Nationwide, bankruptcies increased 2.6 percent.

Those numbers are sharp contrasts to data released in August, which showed that filings jumped 26 percent in D.C., 36 percent in Maryland and 15.4 percent in the Eastern District of Virginia for the 12-month period that ended in June 2010.
