Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid committed their first robbery together.
Butch Cassidy, born Robert LeRoy Parker, was a notorious train robber, bank robber and leader of the Hole in the Wall Gang. Harry Longabaugh, aka The Sundance Kid, earned his nickname after spending time in prison in Sundance, Wyo.
Together they formed the Wild Bunch Gang, which performed the longest string of successful bank robberies in American history.
The gang was for a time best known for their lack of violence during the course of their robberies, relying heavily on intimidation and negotiation. In reality, several people were killed by members of the gang, including at least five law enforcement officers.
One theory is that both Butch and Sundance were later killed by soldiers in Bolivia in November 1908. However, there is evidence that one or both returned to the United States and died decades later.
