Montgomery County police are searching for two armed bank robbers and hoping the public can help get them off the streets before they strike again.

According to police, one robber used a semiautomatic handgun to rob a Silver Spring Citibank.

It was just before 6 p.m. Friday and the bank at 9400 Georgia Ave. was getting ready to close when the robber walked up to a teller, pulled out the gun and demanded cash. The teller complied, handing over an undisclosed amount of cash. The robber ran out, heading in an unknown direction.

Police described the robber as a black man between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He has a medium build and is about 45 years old. At the time of the robbery he was wearing a gray knit hat and a dark-colored jacket.

It was the second armed robbery in Montgomery County in as many days. On Thursday morning, the M&T Bank at 4800 Hampden Lane was robbed at gunpoint.

Despite similarities in the robbers’ descriptions, police do not believe the cases are related. The robber in the M&T robbery is also black and about 45 years old, police said. He is about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a heavy build. He was sporting a mustache and beard. Anyone with information about either robbery is asked to call Montgomery County police at 240-773-5100.
