13 hurt, driver charged in Dulles access road bus crash

A bus driver has been charged in the crash on the Dulles Access Road that sent 13 people to the hospital Monday morning, authorities said. Wayne Bowles, 38, of Leesburg, was charged with failure to maintain control after the Tysons Express transit bus he was driving struck a construction vehicle on the airport access road between Beulah Road and Trap Road near Vienna shortly after 9 a.m.

The construction vehicle was a large truck fitted with a barrier designed to protect construction crews working along the highway, said Courtney Mickalonis, spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The eastbound truck then struck an unoccupied vehicle belonging to one of the workers.

Bowles and 12 of the 26 passengers were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, authorities said. None of the construction workers were injured.
