Police search for suit-wearing bank robber

The FBI has released surveillance photos of a suit-wearing man who robbed a District bank.

According to D.C. police, the suspect entered the United Bank on the 1600 block of K Street NW about 10 a.m. July 14. He passed a note to a teller demanding cash. He implied he had a gun, and the teller turned over an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect ran out of the bank and was last seen walking north on the 1000 block of 17th Street NW, police said.

The suspect is described as a black man in his late 30s or early 40s. He had a full beard. He’s about 6 feet tall and weighs between 180 and 195 pounds.

He was wearing a black suit and a black Kangol-style hat, police said.

Officials said bank robbers sometimes wear nicer clothing to put their intended victims off guard.

A bank robber in the Boston area was able to get inside a closed Citizens Bank branch while wearing a suit last week. The man pretended to be taking cash out of an automated teller machine when an unsuspecting bank employee walked by and entered the bank. The suspect then forced his way inside the bank before the employee could close the door.

The bank robber had pulled up in a BMW that police believe was stolen. He was caught when a bank employee sent a text message to the manager of a different branch and the manager alerted police to the robbery in progress.

Anyone with information about the July 14 robbery should call police at 202-727-9099 or 888-919-CRIME. The District police department is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the robber.
