Teen will be tried as adult in Annapolis shooting

A 16-year-old Annapolis boy who confessed to shooting and paralyzing a man in April will be tried as an adult, an Anne Arundel judge ruled.

Malachi McFarland was a ninth-grader at Annapolis High School when his mother turned him in to Annapolis police in connection with the April 28 shooting of Jawan Keith Tasker, 20, outside the Harbour House apartments on the 1000 block of President Street.

Circuit Court Judge Paul Hackner declined Monday to transfer McFarland’s case to juvenile court despite the Department of Juvenile Services’ recommendations.

If convicted of attempted first-degree murder as an adult, McFarland could face life in prison, whereas the maximum sentence he would face as a juvenile is incarceration until his 21st birthday.
