The Virginia governor asked for and was granted a federal disaster declaration to help 22 localities in the state recover from Hurricane Irene. The declaration allows the counties and cities to get federal funds to cover repairs to critical infrastructure, debris removal and other expenses. The hurricane killed four people in the state and caused an estimated $39 million in emergency response costs and damage to public property.
