Fairfax man killed in motorcycle crash A 32-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car in Oakton. Fairfax County police on Wednesday identified the man as Darren Morrell, of Oakton. Police said the crash happened at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, when Morrell struck a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix that exited a parking lot and turned in front of him near Chain Bridge Road and White Granite Drive. Morrell was thrown from his 2005 Honda CBR. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Pontiac’s driver, an 85-year-old man, was not injured. Police said no charges have been filed, but the crash is still under investigation.
Secret Service officer’s gun fires near Russian Embassy
The U.S. Secret Service is investigating the accidental discharge of a firearm by one of its uniformed officers near the Russian Embassy. According to a spokeswoman, the incident happened around 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, on the 2600 block of Tunlaw Road NW. The gun fired while the officer was sitting inside a patrol car. The bullet shattered the vehicle’s window. No injuries were reported.
D.C. man gets 21 years
for child sex abuse
A D.C. man was sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexually abusing three girls under the age of 12. Charles G. Pettis, 39, pleaded guilty in May in D.C. Upon his release from prison, Pettis must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
