The Blotter: BLOTTER

Body found near Lincoln Memorial

District police are investigating the death of a man found Sunday morning in a park near the Lincoln Memorial.

Police say they believe the unidentified adult male, who was discovered in West Potomac Park near the Potomac River shoreline, committed suicide. No foul play is suspected.

A U.S. Park Service employee found the body on Sunday morning, and handed the case over to D.C. police shortly before 10 a.m.

Roads by the crime scene were re-opened by noon.

Woman hospitalized after tree rips through home

A Fairfax County woman was pinned to the floor of her home when a 70-foot-tall tree fell through the roof of her home early Sunday morning.

The tree crashed through the bedroom of the home on the 5000 block of Lavery Court in Burke, Va., at around 1 a.m., also trapping an adult male. The man was unhurt, while the woman was transported to INOVA Fairfax Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a two-hour rescue mission.

Fire & EMS responders said they believe Saturday night’s heavy winds toppled the tree.

The house has been condemned.

Officials investigating highway sign that collapsed on truck

A 30-foot-tall sign collapsed onto the eastbound travel lanes of Interstate 66 on Saturday, striking a pick-up truck.

The truck’s driver survived without serious injuries and the Virginia Department of Transportation launched an investigation. Bridge engineers were assessing the accident near Monument Avenue in Fairfax on Sunday.

“This is a very serious matter and I want to assure motorists and the public that VDOT will get to the bottom of what caused the collapse so we can prevent this from happening again,” VDOT Commissioner Greg Whirley said.

The fallen sign was last inspected in December 2007. Officials said the investigation is expected to last several weeks, and could not say whether a fast-moving snow squall passing through the area contributed to the collapse.
