D.C. man gets 40 years for fatal stabbing of gay man

A D.C. man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Tuesday for the stabbing death of a gay man in Northwest Washington.

Justin L. Navarro, 26, was found guilty in March of first-degree murder and other related charges in the 2009 slaying of 31-year-old Kevin Massey. The D.C. jury rejected the prosecution’s charges that the killing was a hate crime.

Prosecutors said Navarro was angry because he had been accused of being intimate with Massey.

On Nov. 6, 2009, Navarro entered Massey’s residence on the 4200 block of Second Street NW, according to police, and demanded “Where’s the faggot at?” He grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Massey at least 18 times, mostly in Massey’s back, prosecutors said.
