Alexandria activist disappeared last week

Examiner Staff Writer Police are looking for a missing Alexandria activist — and the person caught on tape using his credit card.

Alexandria police said in a statement that 53-year-old Lenwood Harris, who goes by Lenny, was last seen at about 9 p.m. on Sept. 21 and is believed to be “endangered.” Police have not elaborated on why they think Harris is in danger or what kind of trouble he is in.

Harris is well knownas an advocate for residents of public housing in Alexandria and has led public meetings about topics such as crime and housing issues.

Authorities began looking into the case last Thursday, after Harris didn’t show up for a presentation at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center and his cell phone was recovered on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

Police this week released surveillance photographs of a man who used Harris’ credit card at an Alexandria ATM on Sept. 22, shortly after 1 a.m.

Harris was last seen at the Charles Houston Recreation Center in the Old Town area. He was driving a 1994 light blue Toyota Corolla that has the Virginia license plate XKG-8385.

Harris is described as black, about 6-feet-1 and 210 pounds. He has dark hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray sweatpants.

The man who used his credit card, described by police as a “person of interest” in the case, is a black man who has a moustache and a small goatee. The man has a muscular build and has tattoos on his right and left forearms.

Friends and family members of Harris held a vigil near George Washington Middle School over the weekend.

Anyone who has information about the man or Harris’ disappearance can call police at 703-746-4711 or 703-838-4444.
