On this day, Feb. 17, 1998, U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman Diane Zamora was convicted in the murder of a high school student who had a crush on her boyfriend.
The killing of Adrianne Jones, 16, occurred in 1995 while Zamora and David Graham were high school sweethearts near Dallas. Graham was on his way to the Air Force Academy. Zamora
was eight months away from attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
On the night of the murder, Zamora hid in the back of a car while Graham picked up Jones to go parking. Zamora tried to snap Jones’ neck but failed, and Jones fled. Graham tracked Jones, and shot her twice in the head.
While at Navy, Zamora confessed to a roommate that she and her boyfriend loved each other so much that they had killed for
each other. Her roommate told a chaplain, who called police in Texas.
Zamora’s trial received national attention, providing Court TV with some of its highest ratings. She was found guilty. Later Graham was convicted on the same charges. Both received life sentences and are in prison.
