Female bank robbers are a rarity in the Washington area, according to the FBI. But that’s just what authorities are looking for: a woman who robbed a bank in the District’s Penn Quarter.
The FBI is asking for the public’s help in catching the woman who robbed the Independence Bank at 1006 E Street NW at about 2:30 p.m. July 14. She demanded money from the teller and got away with the cash on foot.
The suspect was described as a white woman, about 5-foot-6, 145 pounds and 40 years old. At the time of the robbery, she wore a white National Mall t-shirt, khaki pants and carried a white canvas bag.
She did not brandish a weapon, but the subject is considered dangerous, according to the FBI.
Anyone with information is asked call Special Agent John Dunham of the FBI Washington Field Office at (202) 278-2000.
Although a female bank robber is not a common sight in the District, FBI spokeswoman Lindsay Godwin said bank robberies by women are on the rise nationwide. In 2009, 6.2 percent of bank robbers were female, up 25 percent from 2006, according to FBI crime statistics.
