Metrobus strikes cyclist

An Arlington County worker was hit by a Metrobus while biking in the county Tuesday morning. The biker, whose name was not released, had a non-life-threatening head injury and was taken to the Washington Hospital Center, according to Arlington County police. The crash happened around 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of South Glebe Road and South Lang Street, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. The bus was a 23A that runs from McLean to Crystal City, said Metro spokesman Philip Stewart. The Metrobus operator will be taken off duty and tested for drugs and alcohol as is standard procedure, Stewart said. The man who was hit is a contract worker for the county’s environmental services division, who works on recycling, county spokeswoman Mary Curtius said.

Man arrested in shooting

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting during a vigil in Prince George’s County, police said. Antione Freeman, of Landover Hills, is charged with attempted first-degree murder charge, according to the Prince George’s police. At about 7:40 p.m. Friday, New Carrollton police officers were monitoring a vigil held in the 5200 block of 85th Avenue for Chris Smith, who was slain on Feb. 6, police said. A gunshot was heard and the crowd began to disperse. An man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

3 cocaine smugglers convicted

Three men have been convicted in federal court in Alexandria for their roles in a Mexican-based group that smuggled cocaine into Northern Virginia. Twenty-eight-year-old Erasmo Alvarado-Ibarra of Woodbridge was convicted Feb. 10 for conspiring to distribute more than 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of cocaine. On the same day, Jose Zuniga-Ruiz, of Woodbridge, 40, and Silvestre Castro-Sandoval, 36 of Stafford were convicted for conspiring to distribute more than 500 grams (1.2 pounds) of cocaine.
