On this day, March 31, in 1993, actor Brandon Lee, the son of legendary martial arts star Bruce Lee, was fatally shot on the set while filming “The Crow.”
Lee, 28, died after being shot by fellow actor Michael Massee with a .44-caliber handgun that was supposed to be loaded with blanks.
After a two-month investigation, North Carolina prosecutors determined that although crew members were negligent, Lee’s death was accidental.
“The Crow,” a dark fantasy about a rock musician who avenges his own murder, was eventually finished using digital technology superimposed on a stunt double and released the next year. The first time Lee appears on screen, he is climbing out of his grave.
The film did well at the box office, taking in more than $50 million.
