Teen arrested for allegedly damaging under-construction mosque

Fairfax County police have arrested a teenager accused of causing destruction to an under-construction mosque in January.

Trenton M. Carter, 18, was arrested May 3 and charged with felony destruction of property, Fairfax County police said.

Police responded to the construction site of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Mosque in Chantilly on the morning of Jan. 30 and found extensive damage but no evidence that the building had been entered. Authorities also found discarded alcohol containers at the site.

Usman Ghumman, an official with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s local chapter, said that there was close to $200,000 in damage. The repairs have recently been completed and the hope is to open the mosque at the end of May

More arrests in this case are possible, authorities said, and police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Police said there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a hate crime.
