Council aide guilty in bribery scheme A former chief of staff to D.C. Councilman Jim Graham pleaded guilty to illegally accepting cash from members of the taxi cab industry and making false statements.
Loza, 45, faces eight to 14 months behind bars and a fine ranging from $2,000 to $20,000, according to federal sentencing guidelines.
Loza admitted that he accepted $1,500 in cash payments in exchange for pushing legislation for a hybrid vehicle exception to a moratorium on new taxi cab company licenses.
Graham has not been charged and has denied any wrongdoing.
Driver identified in fatal crash
The tractor-trailer driver killed in a fiery Tuesday crash on the Capital Beltway has been identified as Osborne H. Bailey, 57, of Charleston, S.C.
Bailey died when his truck struck a bridge embankment of the D’Arcy Road overpass in Forestville at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to Maryland State Police. His vehicle also collided with several cars, and one man was injured but survived.
Some lanes on the inner loop of the Beltway were closed through Wednesday morning.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Lorton man indicted in W.Va. double murder
A grand jury has indicted a Virginia man on charges of killing a West Virginia woman and her 3-year-old son, then burning down their home.
Antonio Prophet, 34, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder and first-degree arson.
Prophet is accused of killing Angela Kay Devonshire, 22, and her son, Andre White, then setting their home in Berkeley County, near Bunker Hill, on fire on June 6, 2010. He was apprehended at a North Carolina homeless shelter after a massive manhunt. – Emily Babay
